About Shep

The story behind Shep

Shep is built by two lifelong friends who became brothers in college.

Matt and Kyle grew up friends in church, then became roommates at Texas A&M, pledged BYX (Beta Upsilon Chi — Brothers Under Christ) together, and spent their summers on the lake as boat drivers at Pine Cove. A whole lot of small groups, ski boats, and late-night conversations about what it actually looks like to walk with Jesus.

Careers, wives, and six kids later, we're still having that conversation — and we kept bumping into the same thing. We know so many people who love the Lord and genuinely want to be in the Word every day. They start a plan. They mean it. Then life gets loud, a week slips by, and “I'll catch up tomorrow” quietly turns into months of silence.

Here's what we keep coming back to:

We don't follow Jesus because He makes life better. We follow Jesus because He is better than life.

— Josh Howerton

The daily habit is the tool.

The goal is Him.

That's why we built Shep. Because the answer to an abandoned devotional isn't more pressure — it's a voice that calls you back to the One worth following.

Why the name Shep?

Named after the Good Shepherd

“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.”

— John 10:27, ESV

Jesus is the Good Shepherd. He knows His sheep by name, and He doesn't shame the ones who wander — He goes after them. He calls them back.

That's the heart of what we're building. Shep meets you where you are today, opens the Word with you, and is still right here tomorrow when you're ready to come back. No streak to break. No plan to fall behind on. Just the Word — and a voice that keeps calling you back to it.

Read. Reflect. Respond. Renew.

— Matt & Kyle
